We are often asked “what do you feed your dogs”? We feed a DIY raw food ( BARF) diet. I believe its one of the best decisions we have ever made for our dogs.
Our dogs have never looked or been healthier. They have fantastically clean teeth and amazing coats. It’s a fact that raw fed dogs require less vet visits in a life time which currently owning 5 dogs is a definite bonus for us We really feel we are investing in their long term health. And then there’s that myth ( or two~)… It gives them a taste for blood!! We can assure you that it is just that, a myth and has been proven that raw fed dogs are no more aggressive than any other dog could potentially be.
Another common concern is that it will poison a dog, after all we certainly couldn’t eat raw chicken for example and be fit and healthy! Well dogs are not made like us, they have much higher acidity in their stomachs which is able to kill off the bacteria that would most certainly harm us.
But I’m a vegetarian! Raw feeding comes in various forms and it’s not a case of having to throw whole prey into the garden at your dog every day (although you can). There are 3 main ways to feed raw
- Pre made shop bought meals. Most pet stores have a good range of pre made foods to choose from.
- DIY, Sourcing meat your self from a supplier, butchers, or a supermarket for example.
- Whole prey feeding. This is as it reads, feeding your dog whole prey sourced from a supplier or independently.
We have to admit when we first embarked on raw feeding 9 years ago we were a little daunting but with a little bit of time and effort we were able to educate ourselves.
We are happy to discuss your dogs diet with you and are able to recommend local suppliers.
